Setup

Installing Karigar

Karigar installs like any other Mac application. You will not need Terminal, and there is nothing to configure.

Not available for download yet. These steps describe the experience once Karigar has been signed and notarised with Apple.

Step by step

  1. Check your Mac first

    You need Apple Silicon, 24 GB of memory, macOS 13 or later, and about 19 GB free. Karigar checks all of this itself and will tell you plainly if your Mac is not suitable — before downloading anything.

  2. Open the disk image

    Double-click the downloaded .dmg. A window opens with Karigar and a shortcut to your Applications folder.

  3. Drag Karigar to Applications

    Then eject the disk image. That is the whole installation.

  4. Open Karigar

    The first launch shows a short setup screen rather than going straight to a chat window.

  5. Get the Hix model

    Karigar downloads Hix — around 15.4 GB — and shows progress, speed and time remaining. You can pause and come back to it; it resumes where it stopped rather than starting again. If you already have the exact model file, you can point Karigar at it instead of downloading it twice.

  6. Karigar checks the download

    Before using the model, Karigar verifies its fingerprint. A file that does not match is discarded rather than loaded.

  7. Start working

    Hix loads into memory and the workshop opens. Later launches skip setup entirely.

Good to know

The first start takes a minute

Hix is a large model and has to be read into memory. Karigar shows you what it is doing rather than sitting on a blank screen.

Quitting stops everything

Closing Karigar shuts down the model too. Nothing is left running in the background.

The model is stored once

Hix lives in your Application Support folder. It is excluded from Time Machine, since it can always be downloaded again.
